VAPE.NEWS: Can Tonsil Stones Cause a Sore Throat?

There are many different causes of a sore throat. It can be strep throat, a simple nasal drip from a cold, or sore and inflated tonsils. But if your tonsils are bothering you, it is not necessarily caused by tonsillitis. Something called tonsil stones might be the cause of the sore throat feeling.

Tonsil stones are the result of food buildup, mucous, and bacteria building up at the back of the throat and settling in the tonsils. It can cause a feeling of having a sore throat since these particles can irritate the throat. While it is most likely not tonsillitis, it is still an unsettling and uncomfortable feeling that can stay with you until the problem has been resolved.

Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done to completely get rid of tonsil stones, but there are some things to help make it less severe. Bad breath is usually accompanied by a sore throat and a feeling as if something is always stuck back there, which can cause coughing and soreness. Many times, the tonsil stone will just dislodge itself on its own, and you will wash it up and spit it out.

Other times, they just simply tend to shrink in size for no apparent reason. Gargling thoroughly is a good way to prevent tonsilloliths (another word for tonsil stones) every day. Be sure you do not eat within thirty minutes of bedtime, as this allows all of the food to go down the throat and not get trapped back there.
